Rotary started in Chicago in February 1905 when four business men decided to get together to share friendship, and expand business and professional acquaintances. After several meetings in one office, the group decided to 'rotate' their meetings at each other's office. They settled on "ROTARY" as a natural name for their group and "ROTARIAN" for each member.
Before long, they realized that fellowship and mutual self-interest were not enough to keep a club of busy professionals meeting each week. Reaching out to improve the lives of the less fortunate proved to be an even more powerful motivation. "Service Above Self" became Rotary's motto.
The first Club outside the USA was established in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1910 and Rotary crossed the Atlantic with the formation of Clubs in Ireland in 1911.
